Gangaram Temple

You must visit the Gangaram Temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The peace envelopes you as soon as you step inside. The huge Statue of Buddha though overpowering has a surprisingly calming effect. It’s almost as if he is saying, “I will always be with you.”

The soft Buddhist chants brought to you on the gentle breeze reach like blessings to your ears. Surprisingly even on a hot sultry afternoon, the premise has a cooling feel. Though visitors are many, everyone maintains the decorum of silence. The Bodhi tree in the center of the temple has a lot of worshippers circling. It is said that Buddha recieved enlightenment under this tree.

As we weave through the different stairways and different plinths, intercepts of his life and teachings are inscribed on the walls. The center has a White stupa where prayers are offered. To its right is a huge hall for prayers in the evenings and special programmes.

There is a small museum that has preserved, jewelry, crockery, watches, talisman, pictures, books and documents along side various Buddha idols. Though not preserved in a manner that will excite the viewer, it is still the remnant of the time of Buddha which makes it interesting.

The temple is kept pristine and clean much unlike the most popular temples in our country. This one is definitely worth a visit.
